Though categorized under ”comedy”, I must say that personally, I’d mark it with a huge stamp that says ”drama” instead because I did not laugh nor cracked a smile once during the 120 minutes. To call this film a romance would be too much of a stretch as well since it was mostly a story that involved one dilemma, and nothing else.
Nick Young comes from a wealthy Asian family and meets a Chinese/American girl in New York and decides to take her to Singapore to a wedding and introduce her to his family, though thinking it’ll be a smooth and harmless act, his family and friends tries their utter best to show that she doesn’t fit in.
Tale old as time, nothing more, nothing less. It wasn’t fresh, it was something that we’ve heard and seen over a million times before.
The mother who believes that no woman is good enough for her son, especially one that doesn’t come from wealth yet the mother was in the exact same position years ago, her husbands’ mother not approving of her. That annoys me, you’d think that out of EVERYONE she’d be the most understanding then but no.
It speeds up rather fast, it doesn’t go slow yet it falls flat and dull when there’s no building up to the actual plot, alongside flashy cars, fancy dresses, and huge mansions the movie lacks depth and soul. It’s just a script about a group of people flashing their millions thinking that money makes them better than anyone else. 3/10
